Seu desespero aumentou quando o governo dos EUA afirmou que Miguél estaria em um hospital em Miami, onde coincidentemente a prima de Emilia, Maria, trabalhava como serviços gerais. Ela informou que Miguel não estava lá. Assim passou a pressionar o governo cubano até que finalmente Miguél apareceu no hospital supracitado. Alguns dias depois voltou para sua casa em Mariel, Cuba, onde logo se casaram (ela aos 16 anos, ele aos 18) e viveram juntos até sua morte, aos 90 anos.

ABOUT: Beloved wife of Miguél (Libertad). They started dating when she was 14 years old. They were engaged when Miguel served in the Cuban army and was called up for operations during World War II until he sank on the ship Mambi in 1943. Together with Miguel's family, they tried tirelessly to find out his whereabouts, since witnesses said he had not died and had been rescued by the US Navy. Their desperation increased when the US government said that Miguel was in a hospital in Miami, where coincidentally Emilia's cousin, Maria, worked as a general contractor. She informed them that Miguel was not there. So she began to pressure the Cuban government until Miguel finally showed up at the aforementioned hospital. A few days later he returned to his home in Mariel, Cuba, where they soon got married (she at 16, he at 18) and lived together until his death at the age of 90.
